Along the rugged western coast of Vancouver Island are some very unique and distinct beaches. There are some pretty cool hikes as well, such as the West Coast Trail – a 47 mile backpacking trail that is often rated as one of the world’s top hiking trails.
I drive up the western coast today in search of a day hike. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to drive to or hike the West Coast Trail. I instead chose to do an easy but fun hike to one of the many beautiful western coastline beaches – Mystic Beach.
The hike itself is actually called the Juan De Fuca Trail. Not only is it a beautiful hike, but it will also give me a small glimpse of what the West Coast Trail is all about.

Hiking here is distinctly different than anywhere else I’ve hiked. One difference I noticed immediately is that the ground within this wooded hike is very soft – almost spongy. Not only does that make it very pleasing to walk on, but also very quiet.
It was mid-afternoon now. The trail continues heading north along the coast to a couple more beaches. I did continue hiking for a little bit but ended up turning around before making it to the next beach which was just a bit too far away given the time.
I headed back to Mystic Beach to explore and soak in all that this hidden gem had to offer. Not a bad way to spend the rest of my afternoon.
