Coming off 5 days of camping at Yellowstone I’m turning around and heading north again to Whitefish, Montana. Logistically speaking, it’s not ideal since I’m driving more than 6 hours back to where I came from.
Whitefish is itself a small ski resort town in the remote northwest corner of Montana. Even with a population around 7,000 it’s a town that has a lot of character and charm.
There are a couple reasons for me wanting to come back here. First – Glacier National Park’s air quality issues have improved. Second – I was completely unaware of this prior to arranging to come here, but some old friends planned a short trip to Whitefish and Canada to do some hiking. What are the odds!? I can’t tell you how nice it was to see some familiar faces.

While I was here I took the opportunity to do some hiking on nearby Big Mountain. The most popular hiking trail is the Danny On Memorial Hiking Trail, which offers expansive views of the surrounding Flathead Valley and Glacier National Park.Distance: 7.2 miles

I even got a chance to get back on my mountain bike again. What could go wrong!? Wait for it…
I’m actually shocked I didn’t more seriously injure myself. Perhaps it’s a good thing that this is likely my last mountain bike ride of the year – I need to get it together, regroup, and give my body a break!
There is so much to love about Whitefish, Montana. Despite all the scrapes and bruises I really enjoyed my time here. I’m looking forward to Glacier National Park.
