The Porcupine Mountains, or Porkies, are a group of small mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near the shore of Lake Superior. I’ve heard about this place but never experienced it first hand. It was time to remedy that.
Since I was already in the area exploring the Apostle Islands, it just made sense to double down with a day trip to The Porkies. I start the day with a long and beautiful hike.
Escarpment Trail
Time: 3.5 hours
Difficulty: Hard
Max Elevation: 1,563 ft
With the big hike behind me, I have just enough time to explore another area of the Porkies and do a short easier hike.
Presque Isle River Waterfalls
Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Easy
Max Elevation: N/A
I only just glossed the surface here with my quick day trip, but it was enough to get a good feel for the area and what it has to offer. Any day spent outdoors exploring someplace new is a good day – and today was no exception. If you’re considering a trip, The Porkies are worth the effort it takes to get here and do not disappoint.
